If you love hiking, the outdoors, and your dog, New Hampshire is the perfect destination for your next adventure. Dogs are welcome on many of New Hampshire’s scenic hiking trails, offering the perfect opportunity to explore nature together. Whether you’re looking for a quick hike with stunning views or a longer trek through the woods, New Hampshire’s dog-friendly trails provide something for every pup and hiker. Here are some of the best dog-friendly hikes in New Hampshire.
Dearborn Forest Loop via Onway Lake
For a quick outing, head to Dearborn Forest Loop. This quick out-and-back trail is fairly easy to navigate, especially once you and Fido get past the initial incline. After the hill at the beginning of the trail, this path flattens out into a more casual hike. However, visitors should note that the leaves are often slippery in certain areas, especially in wet conditions. Take your time on uneven terrain and always prioritize the safety of you and your furry friend. Additionally, several visitors note that there aren’t many parking spots at the trailhead. We recommend visiting this trail early in the day or parking somewhere else nearby.
Highlights:
- 2.6 mi trail with 308 ft elevation gain
- Estimated time to complete: 1 hour & 4 minutes
- Located: Raymond, New Hampshire
- Certain areas of the trail are slippery
Mount Major via Brook and Main Trail Loop
For a longer, moderately challenging hike, bring Fido to the Mount Major Trail. As you hike along the path, you’ll see stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains. You and Fido are likely to see many other hikers, both human and furry, along this popular trail. If your pup prefers solitude, we recommend starting your hike early in the day or choosing a less-traveled trail.
Although this trail is relatively easy to navigate, visitors should note that there are a few rocky and slippery areas. To protect Fido’s paws, you may want to invest in a pair of dog hiking boots. This trail has two routes with slightly different terrains, so you can choose the option best suited for you and your pup’s skill levels. There’s also a great picnic spot at the top of the summit, which is a great place to rest and take pictures of your dog.
Highlights:
- 3.9 mi trail with 1,151 ft elevation gain
- Estimated time to complete: 2 hours & 20 minutes
- Located: Alton Bay, New Hampshire
- Trailhead has plenty of parking spots
Old Bridle Path
If you’re looking for a shorter trail in New Hampshire that’s not too strenuous, Old Bridle Path is an excellent option. This hike has well-maintained paths and isn’t steep, making it suitable for small breeds and senior pups. This trail gradually leads to the summit, where there are plenty of areas to sit and enjoy the panoramic view of Squam Lake. Old Bridle Path also has several ledges where hikers can stop and enjoy the views along the way. To guarantee a parking spot at this popular trail, visitors recommend heading to this trail early in the day.
Highlights:
- 1.7 mi trail with 383 ft elevation gain
- Estimated time to complete: 53 minutes
- Located: Center Sandwich, New Hampshire
- Trail has several man-made steps
Mount Morgan Trail
If you and Fido are up for a challenge, check out Mount Morgan Trail near Squam Lake. This unpaved trail leads upwards along Mt. Morgan, with breathtaking views of Mount Major and the Greater Lakes Region from the top. Visitors with dogs should note that they’ll have to take a detour when they get close to the summit.
Along this route, there are several wooden ladders that are not a dog-friendly climb, so plan on taking your furry friend around the alternative route. However, visitors note that hikers can still reach the beautiful views without taking the ladder route. Taking this path will also prevent you and Fido from needing to climb up some of the steeper portions of this trail.
Highlights:
- 3.9 mi trail with 1,377 ft elevation gain
- Estimated time to complete: 2 hours & 34 minutes
- Located: Holderness, New Hampshire
- Some areas of rocky terrain and steep hills
